J. Denis Abbott

May 8, 2005 | 10:54 pm

I am sad to announce that J. Denis Abbott, our grandfather, passed away at 6:50am on Saturday the 7th of May.

As a tribute I have posted the lyrics to the family famous “Lavatory Man” as performed on many occasions.

Dane (Denis) was quite famously known in the family for his wonderful songs at various parties or events. One of the most famous was the “Lavatory Man” which just doesn’t seem to exist anywhere else in the world!

Dane often said in his youth that him and his friends would sit around having a few drinks singing song after song, he lamented in his latter years that he couldn’t remember them all, however the two he did always know were this one and another known as the rambler, which is widely recorded elsewhere.

The Lavatory Man

I walked up the gang plank like a knight of old,
I picked up the baby barely six months old,
He left a stain upon my suit which was so spic and span,
Oh the little blighter knew that I was the Lavatory Man!

Will you woe will you woe,
Will you woe will you woe,
Oh the little blighter knew that I was the Lavatory Man!

I walked into the bathroom and there sat old McGrath,
He had his hand entangled in the plug hole of the bath,
He said, “please extricate me as quickly as you can”,
I said, “I’m not the plumber, I’m the Lavatory Man!”

Will you woe will you woe,
Will you woe will you woe,
I’m not the plumber, I’m the Lavatory Man!

Now, some young ladies have no respect at all,
They won’t read the sign apinned on the wall,
“When finishing your toilet don’t drop it on the floor,
Just leave it in the pan for the Lavatory Man!”

Will you woe will you woe,
Will you woe will you woe,
Just leave it in the pan for the Lavatory Man!
