Peggy Turner 1910 - 2007

April 23, 2007 | 10:57 pm

Went to a memorial service today for an old friend, Peg Turner. Peggy was my grandfathers cousin, but I knew her as our fantastic neighbour from when we lived in mission bay. It was only by chance we discovered we were related.

Peggy TurnerPeg was an incredible person. She was so active, with the church, with community groups, with her family, around her house. We lived in a block of 3 units, Fe and I at the front, Jim & Daisy Edwards in the middle and Peg at the back. Jim & Daisy didn’t have the greatest health so I used to make sure I did the lawns around the place, and Peg would do all the gardens, including often picking up the clippings with a couple of old licence plates. She was so active for what we thought was a 70 year old woman, imagine our suprise to find out she was 90!

Peg was a huge inspiration to so many people, a real lover of life and someone who just took you for who and what you were. She never pre judged anyone and lived life to the full. She was direct in her speech but caring in her actions. Someone who made a real difference in my life and I hope I have learnt something from her.

I would like to say rest in peace, but that doesnt seem appropriate. Wherever you are Peg, I hope your having a great time.

Happy Birthday to me!

April 6, 2007 | 12:15 pm

Good friday was my birthday, great day. The fangdamily all came round for a huge fry up breakfast (mmm… sausages…) and then Fe and I went out for dinner. As much as I love the kids its was nice for the two of us to get out for a bit of a break.

Speaking of the kids I managed to catch them on video singing me happy birthday, to be fair this was a couple of weeks ago, but hey!

CeBit

April 4, 2007 | 2:43 pm

Well I’ve been pretty slack lately, so much going on haven’t had time to catch up on it all!

Works been pretty insane with some M&A stuff going on and in the middle of it all I spent a week in Germany for a trade show.

What a trade show it was. CeBit is the biggest trade show in the world, it mainly covers consumer electronics but also has a host of business to business stuff there to. Its in Hanover, which sort of seems to be a bit of a hole, except for its show grounds. I mean over half a million square meters of show grounds, 27 halls, 35 function rooms, resteraunts, shops even a beer hall to seat a few thousand people. There are buses and taxis ferrying people around, it took me over 15 minutes to walk from where we were based to where most of our customers were towards the other end of the grounds. Amazing stuff. They reckon they get about 500,000 visitors through, which is pretty impressive for a town with a population of about 500,000! Only in Germany could they pull this off. I mean the whole city gets together to get people too and from the showgrounds, even the motorways turn into one way systems to get people in, with public transport running every few minutes. We never had to wait more than a few minutes for a bus, train or taxi. Bloody amazing stuff.

Anyways I’ll post again soon on some of the other stuff we’re up to.

Hi Y’all

March 11, 2007 | 11:01 pm

Just a quiky for you all. Things have been so busy lately I havent had the chance to think properly let alone blog, although the bourbon may not have helped… Anyways I fly out to germay tomorrow, Hanover to be exact, looking forward to getting into those sub zero, north german, temperatures… not :-)

Anyways only away for a few days but give lots of sympathy votes to "her indoors" "sexy mama" who will be continuing the battle for "global" home domination in a fierce battle, pitted against the invading hordes of 3.5 & 1 year olds who are, every day, trying to take control of the planet our house…

Good surprises

February 16, 2007 | 1:36 pm

They say good things come in small packages and you shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. They also say that you can’t get pregnant while breast feeding and it’s hard to get pregnant when your over 35. Now I agree with the first 2 but those last 2 ideas are a load of codswallop. Turns out that farting in bed is likely to get your missus pregnant if she isn’t holding a coin between her knees (old fashioned but surprisingly effective method of contraception).

Funny story. Near the end of my work Christmas do I pick up my cell phone and there are like 7 missed calls and 3 new messages, I think gosh (or a word with the same number of letters, but spelt differently, and rhymes with “puck”), something must be wrong. So I check my messages and they are all from Fe and go something like this:

  1. (happy friendly tone) “Hi honey, just wondering how the parties going and if you know what time you’ll be home. Give me a call.”
  2. (matter of fact tone) “Hi, whats going on, are you coming home after the party or going into town. Can you call me”
  3. (slightly stressed tone) “Umm whats going on? Where are you? You need to give me a …“ (long pause followed by very stressed tone) ”… [insert favourite expletive here] … Get home now! Its urgent!”

So anyway I call and Fe just tells me I need to get home right away, its urgent. Me thinking someones been hit by a bus has to know whats going on. So she tells me she thought she might be pregnant so took a test. The last message she left was as she walked back into the bathroom to check it and saw the little blue line, hence the pause and animated close.

This is all quite funny as while she was leaving that message I was telling one of the girls from work that we hadn’t decided if we were going to have more kids and would probably wait a little while, two is certainly enough of a handful. Little did I know what was going on in my cell phone…

Don’t get me wrong, we’re absolutely stoked that we’re having another sproglet. To be fair the idea of having 3 kids has taken a little bit of getting used to, and we didn’t want to give it too much thought until the 12 week scan, but its all good.

We had the scan yesterday. It was a bit of a drama. We had booked in with a specialist as William gave us a bit of a scare in his scan and wanted someone to have a close look at this one, but somehow we got the time wrong and missed the appointment. Fe was sure something was wrong and couldn’t wait until next week to get confirmation, plus she had to let Uni know if she was pulling out of the course or not. So started calling every place in the area to try and get a scan that day, last phone call she made was a good one and we managed to get into see someone at the last minute. All fears were allayed, as soon as the scan thingy was plugged in the little blighter started jumping up and down, letting us all know that he was still there and doing well.

So that’s the big news. Baby number 3 due in August. Beth has told mummy that she has to have a girl so that it can be her best friend. She doesn’t want a boy because boys are yucky, except William, he’s OK. Should be an exciting year!
